Especially in times of a global pandemic you might want a change of scenery more than ever but still want to stay relatively close to your home and stay on a budget. At least that was my thought process when I started planning my three day trip to Vienna in summer of 2020. If you are interested in knowing what I would do in a very limited amount of time with a smaller budget. Just keep on reading.
Day One …
On the first day of my trip I arrived around 10am at Vienna International Airport (Vienna-Schwechat). Heading towards the city centre I took the train (normally Railjet but wasn’t available due to Covid). After wandering around the city for a bit I headed off to the hotel to check-in.
Next up on my list was one of the more traditional attractions Vienna offers: Café Central. Located near the Stephansdom cathedral and the stunning Volksgarten park it feels like a time capsule within the very hectic and crowded city life. The café is overall a bit on the pricier site but it is definitely worth the visit even if it is just because of the beautiful main room with its incredible high ceilings and classy feel to it (also a classic Sachertorte never harmed anyone).
After my small coffee and cake break I headed towards the Schwedenplatz, a great spot to just sit down for a minute and enjoy crowds wandering next to the Donaukanal. It is also a great place from which one can explore more of the hidden spots the city center has to offer. If you just walk up the inconspicuous stairs leading towards a few seemingly hidden churches and local shops that are just worth a quick peak. To this part of the guide there is really no structure or plan. Just enjoy the city in all its beauty! Also the risk of getting lost is very very low as one just has to look up, above the houses lining the streets to find the very tip of the Stephansdom. Once found, its just a question of following the remarkable.
Day two…
On the agenda for the second day was a visit of the two Albertina museums. As they are both located relatively close to one another. One can easily visit both in a short amount of time without much effort. Out of the two I would most definitely recommend Albertina over Albertina Modern. The exhibition was way more versatile and overall way more interesting.
After spending about five hours in both museums, I started walking towards Karlsplatz as it is across the street from Albertina Modern. Karlsplatz is a great hang-out spot with an incredible view of the Karlskirche.
Also a fantastic place to just relax, maybe read something, or just enjoy the peace and quiet is at Belvedere Castle Park. The incredible garden is very similarly structured as the one at Schönbrunn, but just a little closer to the city and easier to get to.
Day three…
On the last day of my trip I planned on visiting the Tiergarten Schönbrunn. It takes about 15 min with the tram from Karlsplatz to Schönbrunn. Once one steps out of the station it takes about 10 to 15 minutes to get to the main entrance of the zoo. The zoo itself is unlike any other zoo I’ve seen before, as the structure and all buildings look very traditional but with a modern touch. For me personally the most exiting part were the polar bears and pandas. But after a long day of walking through the huge park I would most definitely recommend, enjoying a nice cup of coffee in one of the many restaurants and cafés.
After spending many hours in the zoo I made use of me already being in Schönbrunn. And walked through the entire Park towards the Schönbrunn Castle, which in itself is already worth the visit!
And as a little side management tip on the side: if you want to visit the Naschplatz, you can easily do it on your way back to the city from Schönbrunn. Just get off the Tram on „Naschmarkt“ and dive into the exotic and delicious smelling snacks and dishes that are being sold across the entire street.
And that concludes my three-day trip to Vienna! Which was overall an amazing experience and a city most definitely worth visiting at least once in your life!!
Hotel
The hotel I stayed in is called „Hotel Schani-Wien“ , a very modern but slightly alternative hotel. It is as perfect for singles as it is for couples but also families. The hotel itself is located near the main train station (about 5 min) and with many of the main tram lines one needs. Saying that, it takes approximately 10 min. to reach „Karlsplatz“ and about 5 more to be welcomend by the great Stephansdom Cathedral.
(Information on the Tram ticket I would recommend)
