Stockholm, the Swedish capital and one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. Maybe you are just spending layover time there, or simply wanted to take in the Stockholm spirit for a couple of hours. Either way, if you don’t have that much time in this extraordinary city, we put together the perfect mixture between the more touristy side of Sweden’s capital and the more hidden spots that have true potential to leave you speechless. And all of it on just a single day!
Sights to see…
Gamla Stan
We begin our journey in the heart of the capital in Gamla Stan. The historic city centre of Stockholm. One of the first building you will see once you cross the bridge is the Riddarhuset. This meeting point for the Swedish royals was built between 1641 – 1674 and is still functioning as said meeting point every three years for all of Swedish royalty.
Walking towards the city centre you will walk by some beautiful buildings and monuments. Just wandering through the small narrow streets can be wonderful. As you are reaching the first big crossing start heading to the left, up the little street. On your right is a quite small and inconspicuous German church „Tyska Kyran“. The official language in the church is German and all of the services are held after German customs. This house of God is still part of the Swedish religious community though.
If you continue walking up the street you will come across the Nobel Museum. It shows a collection of all nobel prize recipients until today. The nobel prize is an award for people who accomplished extraordinary work in their field. Said fields are Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature, Peace and Economic. A few of the recipient you might know are Barack Obama, Marie Curie (including her husband, daughter and son in-law) and the European Union (EU). The museum is definitely a good way to include a few educational events in your Stockholm in a day.
Next up on our list is the Nikolai Church located just up the street from the Nobel Museum. The monument was first built in 1279. However since then it has gone through multiple renovations and expansions. The effects of those can be seen fairly quickly just by taking a look at the many different architectural styles that can be spotted throughout the historical building. A litte tip here… visit the church’s patio! It inherits some great artifacts people of any age can enjoy.
Across from the Nikolai Church lies the Stockholm Palace. The stunning building is the official residence for the current monarchs of Sweden. If you want to visit the overwhelming building you can easily do so in advance. There are multiple different „sections and rooms“ one can take a guided tour through or explore it on your own. For example the “Royal Apartments”, “The Treasury”, “Gustav III Museum of Antiques” or “The Royal Chapel”.
Alberget
Right across from Gamla Stan lies Alberget. The small district is home of the globally known Vasa Museum. The main attraction of the museum is the Vasa. On of the greatest and strongest ships at the time it sunk, in 1628. Due to the very short time the ship spent on sea it has been fully recovered about thirty years later. The most impressive fact is that it could not only be fully recovered but they were also able to restore it in its entirety, which can now be marveled at at the museum.
After walking through the city all day long you might feel a slight hunger. For that we have got just the right thing for you: The Vasa restaurant right next to the museum. They offer all kinds of traditional Swedish dishes, snacks and desserts (maybe try the cinnamon knots).
Secret spot…
Now that we have visited the more touristy side of Stockholm, we got to see what the true magic of the city is really about. I guess there are many locations that are considered more unknown and would technically fit the term „secret spot“, but there is one location in particular that is just mindblowingly beautiful, especially the sunset or sunrise! All of Stockholm lies infront of you, all of the monuments are almost reachable, you can hear people partying, laughing and just enjoying life. You can see all of the hustle and bustle but are yet so far from it. The view can be enyojed best with a drink of your preference, a good book or just by itself (because honestly, you won’t have focus to even start reading). The place I am making all the fuss about is located in Bastugatan, Stockholm.
And that concludes our day in Stockholm! We tried to show you as much as possible in a very short amount of time. We hope you liked it and maybe even take it into account on your next trip to Stockholm!
